Microphones FAQ

Questions about LOM microphones. For Elektrosluch, Elektrouši, Elektroucho Pro, and Priezor, see the Electromagnetic FAQ. Having a problem with a mic? See Troubleshooting.

Choosing a microphone

What is the difference between basicUcho, mikroUši, and Uši series?

Uši (Pro) have higher sensitivity, lower self-noise, but a bigger size. mikroUši (Pro) are tiny and have better frequency response. basicUcho has the same (or slightly higher) sensitivity than Uši Pro, but a lower max SPL (110 dB SPL vs 122 dB SPL).

For very quiet sources such as natural sounds, we recommend Uši Pro or basicUcho — they also offer more accessories. mikroUši come in handy when you need a discreet recording solution and don't mind the slightly higher noise floor.

Series Quiet sounds, nature Music, urban sounds Louder sounds Ultrasound
basicUcho series may distort at higher SPL ✅ (<60 kHz)
Uši series ✅ (<80 kHz)
mikroUši series could be too noisy ✅ (<80 kHz)

See the full comparison table.

What is the difference between (mikro)Ucho Pro and (mikro)Uši Pro?

Ucho Pro is a mono version of Uši Pro, and mikroUcho Pro is a mono version of mikroUši Pro. In other words, (mikro)Uši Pro is a sensitivity-matched pair of two (mikro)Ucho Pros.

See the full comparison table.

Can I get basicUcho matched?

Yes. When you order multiple basicUchos, we try to match them together — and it can be more than just two. Unfortunately, we can't match microphones retroactively, so order them together if you want a matched set.

Cables & mounting

Can I use Uši with the Uši Pro (XLR) cable, or Uši Pro with the Uši (minijack) cable?

Yes. We designed these to be fully compatible and modular — you can simply swap the cables.

Can I use my own mini-XLR cables with Uši microphones?

Unfortunately not. Our Uši Pro (XLR) cable contains special circuitry that converts the phantom power from the recorder to plug-in power. Using your own cable while phantom power is on may permanently damage the microphones.

What is the recommended wind protection for (mikro)Uši (Pro)?

We recommend Windbubbles by Bubblebee Industries — size 4 for Uši (Pro) and Ucho Pro, and size 2 for mikroUši (Pro) and mikroUcho Pro.

You can also make your own from bits of faux fur, but professional solutions give better acoustic transparency (and possibly better overall performance).

Can't get the cable off?

If the cable seems stuck on the microphone body, don't force it — see Troubleshooting.
